Combination course

For three hours we meet in the studio and explore the possibilities of clay. After an introduction to various techniques for hand building (slab building, coiling and thumbing), I show you the basic grips of wheelthrowing, and then you create freely based on your own wishes and ideas. Time at the wheel is about 1 hour per person, and if you want, I will help you with the centering, which is usually the most difficult part. We use stoneware clay that can withstand both dishwasher and microwave oven, and after the products have dried, I fire and glaze them in a beautiful, white glaze. The products are then ready to be picked up after about 4-6 weeks. (Or, if agreed, I can send them to a shipping fee.)

Creative Afterwork

Welcome to Falun's most delightful place, for a creative start to the weekend! In the studio, the table is set up with clay, tools and materials according to the season, along with sparkling drinks* and snacks for you and your friends! I start with a basic introduction and then you create on your own for two hours - unwind after the week and let the creativity flow, before the weekend starts. Perhaps you will continue for a dinner or a barhopping down town - the studio is within walking distance to Falun's solid range of restaurants and pubs! 1 kilo of clay is included and I will glaze and fire one chosen item, which you can pick up 4-6 weeks later

Day course/ Theme course

During a themed day, we gather in the studio to create together, based on season and desire. The layout is the same as in the shorter “try-on-classes”, but with longer time to create, i.e. I give you a walkthrough and the basics of the techniques of slab building, coilling and thumbing or sculpting, and help you along the way with both inspiration and material handling. After the walkthrough, you can freely create whatever you want in any chosen clay, (we use stoneware clay that can withstand both dishwasher and microwave oven.) After about half the time, we take a short break and enjoy a luxurious coffee buffet. (A microwave oven is available if you want to bring some tasty snacks.) The last 15 minutes we tidy our spaces, then your creations are left in the workshop to dry before they are bisquit fired, dipped in a beautiful white glaze and then fired again. (NOTE! Sculptures are only biquefired, unless otherwise agreed) Everything is ready for you to pick up after about 4-6 weeks. (I can also ship the items for a shippingfee.)

Evening course

For 5 weeks we meet in the studio at Slaggatan 29 in Falun to create in clay. Initially, we go through the different hand building techniques (thumbing, coiling, slab building and sculpting, and I give a basic overview of the different steps and grips of wheelthrowing. On the following occasions we split up between two stations: one handbuilding station and one wheelthrowing station and create together - 2 occasions at each station or all occasions at the same if enough seats are available. (the handbuilding station has room for everyone, but there are only 4 throwingwheels.) After completing the course, I will bisque fire, glaze and glaze fire your creations. (It's possible to buy a separate glazing occasion for 995: -/ person, if you want to participate and learn more about this part of the process.) On every occasion I offer coffee/tea and cake, and a microwave oven is available for those who want to bring something more nutritious. Cost of clay is added by 90:- per kilo

Raku Course

“Raku” is the name of a special technique for firing ceramics. Originating in Japan, the method produces intriguing patterns of black crackle rings and beautiful metal shifts in the glaze. The crackling occurs when the products are moved directly from the approximately 1000 degrees hot gas oven to a “soot chamber” with combustible material. This catches fire of the hot objects. The fire is then smothered by means of a lid, and in the reducing environment then formed, the metallic color shifts and the blackened goods occur. Raku actually means “joy,” and pure and cutting joy it is to create pottery with this method - it's fast, unpredictable and insanely exciting. Get ready for a nerve-wracking experience! At the first course, we meet in the studio and produce our works. These are then left to dry before I burn them before course two. On the second occasion, we glaze our creations and burn them in the gas-powered rake oven. When the glaze has melted at about 1000 degrees, we move them with pliers to a barrel filled with sawdust. The sawdust is then caught on fire by the hot objects, which are then allowed to smolder in a reducing environment before finally being moved over to a watering can and washed clean of soot. Alstren is ready to take home the same day. During the course day two we are outdoors all day - clothes according to the weather. (The smoke from the soot barrel smells quite strong, so don't put on your best “go-away” garments.)

Try creating & shaping in ceramics

I give you an introduction and a walkthrough of the basic techniques of slab building, coiling, thumbing and sculpting, and guide you along the way with both inspiration and how to handle the tools. (NOTE! Only hand building techniques are included in the workshop, no wheelthrowing!) After the walkthrough, you can freely create whatever you want in any chosen clay (we use stoneware clay which can be used in both dishwasher and microwave ovens). The items are then left in the studio to dried before being bisque fired, dipped in a beautiful white glaze and then fired again. Everything is ready for pick up after about 4 -6 weeks. (Or, if you prefer, I can send them for a shippingfee). The price of 995: - (1250: - for a weekend class) includes 1 kilo of clay, two firings,and glaze, as well as coffee or tea and cake . It's possible to buy extra clay at a cost of 90: -/kilo

Turning Course, Group

Book a delightful experience at the throwingwheel for you and your friends or family! After a review of basic grips and turning techniques, you will work on your own throwingwheel under my supervision throughout the entire session. During these two hours you will have time to create between 2-4 objects, depending on how fast you get to the technology. After the session, I keep your creations to dry slowly in a humidity cabinet before firing and glazing them in a beautiful and durable white glaze. The products are ready for pickup approximately 4-6 weeks after the actual workshop. GROUP BOOKING (minimum 3, max 4 people): 1 250: -* /person. **Weekend surcharge is 200: -/person. ) * The price includes access to your own throwingwheel, 1 kg of clay, 2 firings and glaze. You book my turning courses either as private/couple lessons where you decide the time and level, or as completed 2-hour sessions for at least 3, max 4 people. In both cases, I start with a review of the turning technique and show the basic grips for turning, then you turn on each turntable under my supervision throughout the session. After the session, I sing your creations to dry slowly in a humidity cabinet before burning and glazing them in a beautiful and durable white glaze. About Made by Pihl/ L' Atelier

Have you ever felt the frustration that time never seems to be enough, and that what gets stepped on is always what you really want to do, what makes you feel your best and energizes you?

I have always felt at my best when I got to be creative and create in different forms - painting, drawing, singing, writing, cultivating, decorating, baking, sculpting... Still, these are the things that usually end up last on my list of priorities for a large part of my adult life, and I think there are too many with me.

However, during a “try-on-night” in clay in 2017, something was awakened in me - partly I found clay as a material, but also a realization that I needed to give space to my creative needs in order to feel good. I came home with a sense of satisfaction that I had not felt for a long time, and decided there and then to get my own ceramic kiln. The fact that clay became the medium of creation was thus more or less a coincidence, although it has always appealed to me because it is both versatile and wayward.

One gave way to the other, and after 25 years as a teacher, in autumn 2019 I made the leap and started Made by Pihl, with the vision to make room for that creative power for myself as well as for others.

My goal is to create sustainable and unique utility products and art for the design and quality conscious, and at the same time inspire and give space for more people to create for themselves.
